The most trouble that I'm having is when someone asks me "How was Africa?"...I just can't explain it in a short period of time, so I warn them that it might take awhile! The experience, especially in the village, was just incredible. Anyone who goes to Africa and "just" goes on a safari will have a nice vacation...but to FEEL Africa, they must live with the people. The animals are cool, but the kids are unreal.

About Us
Come Kuona was founded in the year 2002, to help support the work of grassroots development organizations working to uplift the welfare of the local people. We provide local organizations with human resources, technical and financial support. Volunteers/Interns assist these organizations, by sharing their skills and knowledge, achieve their goals of poverty eradication, fighting diseases and illiteracy.

Come Kuona is a volunteer, internship and Eco-cultural safari organization with programs in HIV/AIDS education, Education, Micro- finance, Poverty eradication, Business education and Trade, Orphanages and Adoption and Medical clinics. Our Eco-Cultural Safari integrates volunteer/humanitarian work and exclusive safaris. Volunteers/Interns mainly come from Europe, USA, Canada and Australia, from all walks of life and range in age from high school to retirees.

We have offices both in the Washington state and Kenya. We offer affordable and enriching programs by having our headquarters in Kenya where the cost of living is generally low and ensures constant monitoring of our programs. This also ensures that we give our volunteers support where they need it most.

Reasons why you should choose Come Kuona

Affordable programs:  Unlike other organizations, we offer  affordable and enriching programs, which makes it accessible to people on a lower budget  and students. Come Kuona , because of our low administrative overhead, use of in country resources and paperless communication,  will save volunteers between 40- 60 percent of the average program fee compared to other organizations.  The cost of living is generally low in our program countries, hence we see no reason for charging high volunteer fees.

Many volunteer placement companies work from the United States, United Kingdom or New Zealand. The cost of living in those countries is anywhere from three to ten times more expensive than in Kenya. The companies that are located in these countries need to pay their employees a living wage and pay high rent for their offices which dramatically increases their operation costs.

There are also no administration or hidden fees with our program costs.

2. Knowledge of our area of operations and experience:  We are very knowledgeable about our  areas of operations and culture due to the fact  that most our staff and operations are based locally  in our program countries. Unlike other organizations which get to visit their programs once a year, we are constantly monitoring and researching our programs. We have been in operation for the last 6 years and handle hundreds of volunteers from 18 year olds to retirees, from university students to Rotarians.

3. Volunteer support: The main reason  why we are based in Africa and only keep representative office  abroad  is to offer support to volunteers where they need it most. This includes all our staff, program staff and host families. From the beginning to the end of the project, our  volunteers are supervised by our knowledgeable and experienced  Volunteer coordinators who offer assistance and support. Our volunteer coordinators also constantly check on volunteers to monitor and evaluate there work and home stay experience.

4. Safe and enriching programs:  Safety is always our top priority. Our programs are located in safe locations. During the last 5 years of our operations we have not had any incident or problems to do with safety. Our programs are well researched and includes includes NGOs, schools and  grassroots community driven projects. We work in conjunction with organizations and institutions that are accredited members of recognized groups such as UNESCO, UNICEF, CCVIS and Rotary International. We hold the same goals and mission of creating a better world and collaborate to make change possible.

We also work with sustainable and environmental friendly programs.

We place our  volunteers  with  experienced  host families whom we know and have verified personally. By staying with host families volunteers are immersed into the local culture and develop meaningful cross cultural relationships. They also get to see local activities like weddings.

5. Emergency services:  All our volunteers have access to a phone which they can use incase of any medical or safety emergency. They also have 3 parties available 24/7 to contact incase of emergencies:

·         The local volunteer coordinator

·         The host family

·         Our  in country office and staff

6. Informative culture and language orientation:  Our programs start with 3 day orientation about the local culture, way of life, language and showing you around your immediate neighborhood. This orientation also deals with culture shock, introduces you to your host community and program staff.

7. Flexible Programs: Our programs can start on any day of the week apart from weekends( Saturday and Sunday) and for any length of time. The start and end dates are entirely up to you.

 8. Pre-departure information:  We offer all our volunteers with extensive pre departure information about there program, what to pack, visas and medical. We also, on request, provide volunteers with fundraising tips.
