TANZANIA PROGRAMS

w/chair Empowerment of Children with Diabilities.

Special needs education, physical therapy, home-based care, counseling, and empowerment center for disabled youth

Our partner program is an NGO serving roughly 1,500 mentally and physically disabled children and youth in the coastal town of Tanga.  This organization strives to create a community where all children can receive their right to education, health services, and full social inclusion by offering a variety of services that include home-based care, counseling, parents peer groups, community based rehabilitation, and a youth center (English lessons, social skills, music class, computer training, sports, and exercise).

Each of the programs emphasizes the dignity and autonomy of people with disabilities, and is strongly founded on the belief that working together as a community can create opportunities for all. While all volunteers have the chance to work with any of these programs, we currently needs volunteers in the following areas:

·       -Occupational therapist

·       -Orthopedics

·      - Physical therapist

·      - Nurses

·      - Social skills/communication

·       -Pediatric doctor/assistant

·      - Neurologist

·       -Counselor

·       Novelty Youth Center:  English teacher, music professionals to teach music, computer instructors, sports trainer

Those interested in working with the program may come as a volunteer, intern, or independent study student for university credit.  This program is open to medical professionals, medical students, teachers, musicians, computer specialist, sports trainers, and students.

PROJECT LOCATION

ABOUT TANGA.

Tanga, a peaceful town cushioned between the Indian Ocean and Usambara Mountains.  This well planned town is easily navigated by bicycle, and contributes to the small town feel.  Tanga has all the facilities of a city including several hospitals, Internet cafes, restaurants, hotels, banks, pubs, and discos.

ATTRACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES

Tanga offers a variety of places one can enjoy the white sandy beaches, and breeze of the Indian Ocean.  One of the most popular places is the Rakazone Swimming Club, which provides private beach access for only 500 Tz a day.  Throughout town there are an abundance of shops, but the best place to find anything you need in on Mkwakwani Street, an area known for its diverse shops.  In the evenings, the nightlife in Tanga is centered predominately around the La Casa Chica disco, and Tanga Hotel which has a live band Wednesday to Sunday.

A popular destination located near Tanga is the Amboni Caves, which were formed in the limestone perhaps 25 million years ago.  Near the caves are the Galanos Sulphur Springs, where the hot and mineral rich water in believed to have medicinal properties, especially against skin diseases.  The Tongoni Ruins (just 17 km away from town) and the ruins on the uninhabited Toten Island (located in Tanga Bay) are also worth a visit.

Day trips can be made to witness the breathtakingly beautiful mountains of the surrounding area at the Amani Nature Reserve located in the Muheza District.  Lushoto is also an area known for its lush greenery and is a great starting point when looking to hike to Irente View Point, Magamba Rainforest, Mtae, or Mlalo.

Farther trips can easily be made to Moshi, Mount Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Mombasa, Kenya. Arrangements to go on Safari in any National Park or Reserve (i.e. Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara) in Tanzania can easily be done in town.
