The most meaningful thing I took away from my internship at the East African Center in Takaungu had nothing to do with the work I was involved in, but rather the interactions I had with the people in the community. Everyone in Takaungu has been so embracing and made me feel right at home. The people I have met here have become like a new family to me and that is what made my internship so rewarding.
I have never felt uncomfortable in Takaungu because the people whom you meet here really go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and safe. What started out as small talk and hellos quickly became deep conversations and frequent invites to go hang out after work was done. Within the three short months I have spent here, the impression that the people of Takaungu have left on me will last a lifetime

Our program fees are 50%-60% cheaper than other international volunteer programs. We manage to keep our program fees low and still have enriching programs due our use of in country resources and paperless communication as much as possible. Also the cost of living is generally low in our program countries.

The program
fee covers the following:

Housing and Food -
During their stay, Come Kuona volunteers are housed with host families in the community they will be based. They will be provided with their own room which will have a bed with pillow and wardrobe with dresser. They will be provided with 3 meals each day. The food is local and nutritious. Vegetarians are also catered for. By living with host families volunteers are immersed into the local culture which help them develop meaningful relationships, forge new insights and cross cultural learning.

Airport pick-up and drop-off -
We provide transport from the airport to the program site and back to the airport upon completion of your project. A Come Kuona member of staff will be at the airport to pick you up  upon your arrival and will return you to the airport on the completion of your volunteer experience.

In-Country transportation- We do not cover daily transportation from living accommodations to volunteers' projects. However all our programs in Kenya are within walking distance to the project sites.

Orientation and Supervision - There is a 3 day orientation that takes place a day or two after you arrive. During the orientation we provide you with information on the culture, language and way of life of the local people. We will also cover topics such as health and safety, local transportation and communication.

Once you officially begin your volunteer duties, Our skilled and knowledgeable volunteer coordinator will always be available to offer support, insight and assistance, throughout your entire stay. Our volunteer coordinator will be with you every step of the way.

Emergency support- Our staff and volunteer coordinators are available 24 hours  a day to handle any emergencies. All volunteers are provided access to a phone which they can use to contact the volunteer coordinator or our offices. The host family and program staff will also offer support incase of emergencies.

Detailed Pre-departure Information- We will provide you with in-depth  pre-departure information pack. This will cover things like what to pack in terms of clothing, medicine, shoes, medicine, visas and much more.

*The program fee does not cover airfare and Visa. The Visa fee is $ 50 USD

In addition to airfare, you will only need to provide for your extra expenses in Kenya or Uganda, i.e. internet, telephone calls, sightseeing, local transport, eating out etc. Volunteers are also responsible for the cost of their immunizations, passport, and visa, though we will guide you through the preparation process. We highly recommend that volunteers get a travel medical insurance policy. If you get the ISIC Card, which is mandatory in order to get some of the great student rate air tickets, then such insurance may be included. The cost of the card is roughly $25.00 USD.

The rest of your budget will vary greatly depending upon your lifestyle. Some volunteers go through a few hundred dollars a month. Others live and play off pennies
